"More than two decades after the collapse of communism... Russian democracy appears to be in reasonable health. Electoral participation is moderately high, although lower than it found in the established democracies and very considerably below the levels registered under communism. The party system appears to be consolidating around a small number of parties with a degree of longvelity, following a period when there was a multiplicity of parties that emerged and faded away often just after one election. Party policies also broadly correspond to a left-right continuum, when parties on the left espousing greater state intervention in the economy, and parties on the right supporting the free market. And not least, the burden of Russia's authoritarian political past - reflected in the nostalgia for communism among older voters - appears to be finally weakening" (Ian McAllister, Voting Behaviour, P.112-113)
